Wood Recycling

Wood recycling is important because when a tree is felled it releases Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere, which is part of climate change and global warming.

It is estimated rainforests are destroyed at 7.5 million hectares per year.
There are other problems which deforestation causes including, soil conservation, many species of plant and animal are at risk from extinction and it also affects the local communities in the way in which they live. Find out more about the effects of deforestation.

Wood is used widely in the UK for Building, furniture, packaging (pallets, crates).

How can I recycle wood?

Some of the Civic amenity sites have a separate area for wood only.

There are a few companies who specialise in wood which can be recycled check in the internet if there is a company near you.

If you are disposing of furniture advertise it on the Freecycle website as you may find that someone else can make use of it.

See if you can reuse it in making something else, like a new shelf or bird table.

How is recycled wood used?

There are several uses for wood which has been recycled including:
  • Animal bedding
  • Children's play areas
  • Pathways
  • Landscaping which helps to suppress weeds and keeps the moisture in.
  • Making new furniture
  • Wood burning stoves or open fires
