Reduce your utility bills and reduce your carbon footprint with Efficient Energy Saving Tips

What is efficient energy saving? Its reducing your energy waste to reduce both your utility bills and your carbon footprint.

Energy prices are at an all-time high. Meanwhile global warming effects are already harming our natural environment.

With fuel prices soaring and global warming set to get worse, there has never been a better time for saving energy, reduce energy bills and do your bit for the natural environment.

Did you know the energy waste for the average family home is between 25-35% of the total energy it uses?

Why Save Energy? trees Whether you want to make savings on money or want to do your bit to help the environment, efficient energy saving just makes sense.

If you can save just 20% of the energy you use, you'll make savings of hundreds of pounds a year - and signifantly reduce your impact on the natural environment.

That's efficient energy saving in practice.

What is Efficient Energy Saving?

Efficient energy saving is all about reducing the amount of energy that is wasted in your home.

It is not uncommon for 25-35% of all energy used in a home to be completely wasted.

Saving this waste and you’ll be making your first steps to help the natural environment – and saving yourself hundreds of pounds every year on your utility bills.

But efficient energy saving techniques goes further - it's about choosing the right products and services we all buy every day.

Choosing what's right for saving energy and what's right for the environment goes hand in hand - giving us all the chance of a better future.

What you can do today - 7 easy steps for saving energy and helping the environment

Lighting
Switch off your lights when you're not using them. It has been estimated that one in three lights are left on each evening when nobody is using them. Don't forget outside lights as well!

If you aren't already using them, switch to low energy saving light bulbs throughout your home that uses one fifth the energy of normal lightbulbs. Low saving energy bulbs are now cheap to buy and much smaller than they used to be. Low saving energy dimmable and ambience lighting is also now available.

Appliances
Switch off computers, stereos, TVs, DVDs and set top boxes when they're not in use. Don't leave them on standby. Contrary to general belief, your TV set top box does not need to be left on standby each night. Just switching your TV and accessories off at the socket each night will make savings of around £40 a year compared to using standby.

Wash you clothes at 30°C - you'll be saving around 40% of the electricity used. You will also reduce clothes shrinkage and colour loss, extending the life of your clothes. Tumble dryers are hugely inefficient too. Hang your washing up to dry when possible. Hanging up your clothes rather than using the tumble dryer on every wash will make savings for the average family of around £40 a year.

Heating
Make sure your central heating is set to turn itself off when the house is empty and that you're not heating up rooms you don't use.

Turn down your thermostat by 1°C - you'll make savings on your heating bills by around 10%. A typical home can save £40 a year - and after a day or so, you don't really notice the difference in temperature.

Adjust the temperature of your hot water - there is no point having water so hot you'll scald yourself, so turn it down to around 60°C.

These are just a few of the cheap and easy measures you can make saving the amount of energy you use. Have a look at our home energy savings to find out more about what you can do.

Each person on average uses 150 litres of water per day.

Saving water

Saving water

There are many simple saving water tips which you can do at home to reduce your water usage.

In the UK we have seen an increase in flood risk. There is still a need for saving water to make savings on our water bills and to increase the amount of water reserves in the dry periods.

There are many water saving devices which can be used in the home and garden, from a hippo flush, saving water in the toilet - to water saving in the garden including water buts and rainwater harvesting.

Overflowing Rubbish Bin

No more overflowing rubbish!
More and more councils are switching to two-weekly rubbish collection cycles. Whilst this increases the take-up of household recycling, many households struggle to manage.

The results are overflowing bins, maggots in the rubbish and frustration.

Sounds familiar? Help is at hand: there are some simple, cost effective ways to solve this problem by reduce, reuse and recycling - and you'll be doing your bit for the environment at the same time.

It's Time to Switch!

Coal vs Wind Power Large scale renewable energy programmes - such as solar, hydro and wind power are accounting for more and more power being generated in the UK.

At the same time, many are worried about the new nuclear power stations being pushed for by the government.

If you haven't already done so, switch to a carbon neutral energy tariff. By doing so, you'll be doing your bit to encourage and ensure further investment into clean, renewable energy sources - and dramatically making savings on your personal carbon footprint.

Is Global Warming a hoax?

Many people have questioned the validity of Global Warming claims, or express doubt as to whether or not Climate Change is down to excessive carbon emissions.

Make your own energy!

There are lots of ways to make your own renewable energy for your own home: solar heating, solar lighting, even a wind turbine on the roof! Some of these projects can cost a lot of money and have questionable payback - both in terms of environmental benefits and saving money.

Yet there are a number of DIY energy saving projects that will cost you only a few pounds and help make a big difference - improving your standard of living and improving your carbon footprint. Now that really is efficient energy saving!

Using your car

Car

With the cost of fuel at an all time high, it makes sense to look at saving money we all spend on driving our cars.

Car usage accounts for approximately 1/3rd of a household’s carbon emissions. By taking a close look at car fuel saving including eco driving, how we use our cars, keeping them as energy efficient as possible and choosing alternative transport where appropriate, we can all make savings on fuel and reduce the impact our cars have on the natural environment.

Green cleaning

Most of the cleaning products we use in our home are hazardous chemicals and increase the risk of toxic exposure.

It is possible and effective making your own green cleaning products using simple ingredients in your kitchen.

There are also some eco friendly cleaning products available to buy ready to use.
