Global Warming Hoax? Why is there a Global Warming Controversy?
So what is the Global Warming Controversy? It’s not so much global warming that causes controversy, as to what we should do about it that causes the problem.
Some of the problem is trying to deal with hard facts: because our climate is so complex, producing climate simulations project different temperature rises and different impacts based on different modelling techniques.
As a consequence, there is no easy roadmap for solving the problem.
This creates a chicken-and-egg situation: Governments and the media start questioning scientists about future projections and don’t get a clear answer because it is impossible to give one. Meanwhile, further scientific research creates more debate and discussion within the scientific community which in turn is picked up by the media as ‘inconclusive evidence’.
At the same time, developing nations have been unwilling to slow down their economic growth by taking into account carbon dioxide emissions.
As a result, other nations are claiming that there is no point them making any changes and putting themselves at an economic disadvantage if their competitors are going to carry on regardless (this is starting to change now with China and India taking a more active role in managing their carbon emissions, and public pressure within the US starting to make itself felt).
Meanwhile, the corrective actions that we need to take to reduce the impact of global warming is so significant, it directly, and adversely affects every person in the world.
As an individual, it is easy to think that there is no point in doing anything about the environment at all: that it needs to be a government that makes the changes. Many people would prefer to ignore the problem if the alternative is giving up a large engine car or changing the way they live. Inaction, as always, is the easiest option.
