Being Environmentally Aware
Being environmentally aware doesn’t mean you have to grow your hair long, smell a bit strange, eat muesli and hug trees. It’s about being aware of our impact on the environment and doing something about it.
We have all grown up in a culture that was not environmentally friendly. Twenty five years ago, Margaret Thatcher – then the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom – dismissed the environment as an irrelevance. It’s unimaginable that any politician who wants to be taken seriously would say the same today.
So don’t overwhelm yourself or your family with lots of environmentally friendly tasks and campaigns. Just take things one step at a time.
Protecting the environment isn’t just about protecting the world from
deforestation
and
global warming.
There are so many other issues to consider and things we can all do to make a difference.
Whether you’re concerned about air pollution, pesticides in food,
plastic shopping bags,
depletion of natural resources,
global warming
or simply saving money, there is something you can do.
So start with the simple things: make sure you’re using
low energy light bulbs,
switch equipment off if it’s not being used, don’t leave TV’s on standby and use the local
recycling
facilities rather than throwing everything in the main rubbish bin.
Don’t let other’s eco-sceptic or fanatic tree-hugging views discourage you from what you believe is right: there will always be people that think you’re a fool for doing something to help the environment, and others who will think you are not doing enough. Just do what you can – and in time, if you can do more, you will.
